London Catholicism, embassy chapels, and religious tolerance in late Jacobean polemic

Reacting sharply against the whiggish thesis that religious tolerance was a heritage of Enlightenment, revisionist scholars have pointed to many pragmatic concessions people made tolerate those other faiths prior eighteenth century. While they underscored contingent relationship with neighbourliness in important case studies, historiography portrays early modern London as an essentially intolerant society for city’s Catholics and church on margins. Through examination London’s embassy chapels reflected vicious anti-Catholic polemic, this article argues not lacking Jacobean London. It additionally shows how ambassadors’ sustained vibrant visible form Counter-Reformation Catholicism capital.
